Use this app on the construction jobsite to quickly find the dimensions, weight and other design properties of hot rolled steel shapes in this exhaustive library that includes W, HP, C, angle, double angle, HSS round, pipe and MT. For each category, the program contains information on the dozens or hundreds of steel sizes. It provides a schematic of the beam and its depth, flange width, flange thickness, weight, Section Modulus Sx and Sy and more information that may be helpful in the field.


The structural drawings show a C12x30 that gets notched into a block wall. You need to find the dimensions in order to properly saw the block wall. This app allows you to quickly find the important dimensions. On the other hand, perhaps you have a steel beam on an existing building and know the dimensions but need to find the size.

I too am a structural engineer (PE).

I purchased this app for iPhone use at job sites when I want to do a quick analysis, but don't have a steel manual or crib sheet copies with me.

I am disappointed.
The app provides Section Modulus (S, in^3) which is required for bending stress computation; BUT no Moment of Inertia (I, in^4) which is required for deflection computation.

Given a reasonably long beam span and a significant load, deflection would most likely control over bending stress. Either way, design professionals must check both.

Shear normally does not control, but could for short heavily loaded spans. Area (A, in^2) is required then for those calculations, & the app provides that.

Thus the section properties are incomplete to be totally functional.

Other less critical properties are also not provided here, but are not of primary concern to me.

At the least, MOMENT OF INERTIA should/must be added to make it "real world!"

I'm wondering why something that normally is so obviously needed was left out?
